What it’s about

In Primal Leadership, Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee argue that the essence of leadership is emotional. They posit that great leaders move us not through strategy or intellect alone, but by igniting our passion and inspiring the best in us. Drawing on neurological research, they explain that due to the brain's 'open-loop' limbic system, emotions are contagious, and a leader's mood sets the emotional tone for the entire group. This creates either 'resonance,' a positive climate of engagement and high performance, or 'dissonance,' a toxic environment of anxiety and dysfunction. The book provides a practical framework based on four domains of Emotional Intelligence (Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management) and details six distinct leadership styles—four that build resonance (Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic) and two that must be used with caution (Pacesetting, Commanding). It goes beyond theory to offer a clear, five-step process for how any leader can develop their emotional intelligence, expand their repertoire of styles, and ultimately build resonant teams and emotionally intelligent organizations that thrive.
